Stretching police presence as east Mesa grows
Jim Walsh - Oct. 8, 2008 08:26 AM
The Arizona Republic
Once Mesa's rural eastern frontier, the city's sprawling Superstition Patrol District is now the epicenter of an exciting future that includes a maturing airport and a world-class resort.

Everyone agrees the district would be difficult to recognize a decade from now, just as suburbia crept into farmlands during the 1990s and changed the area's landscape.

"I think it's going to change dramatically. I think you'll see more urban areas. It's very exciting," Superstition Commander Vicki Myers said. "This really is a good area. This is where I want to live."
But as Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport emerges as a job creation center and the General Motors Desert Proving Ground gradually becomes a massive mixed-use development, the district faces numerous growth challenges while resources are stretched thin by Mesa's ongoing budget struggle.

Officers already are stretched in the Superstition District, with emergency response times sometimes hitting 5:30 minutes, or one to two minutes longer than other patrol areas.
